The Reds released Chafin on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Chafin exercised the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract after being told he would not be receiving a promotion in the immediate future. The veteran southpaw has permitted five runs (one earned) with an 8:6 K:BB over 9.1 innings with Triple-A Louisville this season. Chafin shouldn't have trouble latching on with a new organization, but he might have to settle for another minor-league contract.

Andrew Chafin: Breaking News
Latches on with Reds
Chafin signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports. Chafin was released by the Twins last Friday despite allowing just two earned runs over six innings in the Grapefruit League. The veteran lefty will now begin the regular season as organizational depth for the Reds, but he figures to have a strong chance to join Cincinnati's bullpen at some point after posting a 2.41 ERA in 33.2 frames last season.
Release granted
The Twins granted Chafin his release Friday. Chafin will hit the open market after a stint with the Twins this spring. The veteran reliever posted a 3.00 ERA across six innings during spring training.
