Barnes was released by the Mets on Sunday. Barnes signed a minor-league deal with the Mets over the offseason and was brought in to big-league camp to compete for a roster spot, but he'll test free agency after failing to secure a place on the Opening Day roster. He appeared in 13 regular-season games a year ago with the Dodgers and hit .214 with two RBI and four runs in 42 at-bats.

Austin Barnes: Breaking News
Signs NRI deal with Mets
Barnes signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training. Barnes appeared in 13 regular-season games for the Dodgers in 2025, posting a .519 OPS across 44 plate appearances before being cut loose by the team in May. The 36-year-old backstop will now aim to return to the big leagues with the Mets, though he'll most likely fill in as minor-league depth at Triple-A Syracuse.
Cut by San Francisco
The Giants released Barnes on Friday. After his long tenure with the Dodgers came to an end May 20, Barnes caught on with the Giants on a minor-league deal about a month later. The 35-year-old backstop debuted for Triple-A Sacramento shortly before the All-Star break but didn't gain much momentum in his bid for a promotion to the big leagues, slashing just .212/.297/.212 over 10 games before the Giants cut him loose. Barnes may look to catch on with another organization before the end of the season, though retirement may also be a possibility at this point.
