McKinney elected to become a free agent Wednesday. The Rangers are doing some 40-man roster housecleaning and McKinney was a casualty. A career .209/.283/.382 hitter over parts of eight major-league seasons, McKinney will be on the lookout for a minor-league contract this winter.

Back with Texas
The Rangers selected McKinney's contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday. The move gives the Rangers additional outfield depth after Wyatt Langford (oblique) was played on the 10-day injured list. McKinney was DFA'd by Texas in early July but opted to stay in the organization in Triple-A, where he has gone 17-for-60 (.283) with one steal, 10 runs, one homer and 10 RBI in 16 games since Sept. 2.
Becomes free agent
McKinney elected to become a free agent Monday. McKinney was booted off the 40-man roster following a brief two-game stint with the Rangers, and he has decided to test out free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. The 30-year-old could wind up re-signing with Texas on a minor-league deal, but he will be available to the other 29 clubs as well.
