Cody Poteet: Breaking News

Bound for free agency

Poteet elected to free agency Monday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Poteet has decided to hit the free-agent market rather than accepting the Orioles' outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. The 31-year-old has missed much of the season with a shoulder injury but recently turned in two scoreless outings at Norfolk.

Activated, outrighted to Norfolk

The Orioles reinstated Poteet (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Saturday and sent him outright to Triple-A Norfolk, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Poteet surrendered five earned runs in 2.2 innings during his lone appearance of the season April 20, and he landed on the injured list shortly afterward with right shoulder inflammation. Now fully healthy, he'll stay put in the minor leagues while also giving up his place on the Orioles' 40-man roster. If he bounces back well at Norfolk, the 31-year-old righty may receive a chance to redeem himself in Baltimore during the final stretch.

Kicking off rehab stint

Poteet (shoulder) is beginning a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Poteet has been on the shelf since late April due to right shoulder inflammation. He has made only one regular-season appearance this year, allowing five runs over 2.2 innings against Cincinnati on April 20. Poteet will presumably need to make several rehab outings given the length of his absence. He could be activated by the Orioles sometime in September if he doesn't experience any setbacks.
