Connor Wong: Breaking News

Wong went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 9-1 win over the Guardians. Wong had a go-head, run-scoring double in the sixth inning and then singled home a pair in Boston's six-run ninth inning. He thought a home run drought dating back to September of 2024 had ended, but his sixth-inning home run was changed to a double upon review. Despite Saturday's effort, Wong sits no better than third on the catching depth chart. This, after interim manager Chad Tracy on Saturday anointed Mickey Gasper as Boston's primary catcher against right-handers, per Tim Healy of The Boston Globe.

Wong (ankle) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Royals. Carlos Narvaez (finger) is on the bench for the series opener after exiting Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta, but Wong is feeling well enough to make his first start since Wednesday following a recent bout with a right ankle injury. Wong came off the bench to replace Narvaez in Sunday's contest, going 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Wong was removed from Wednesday's game against the Phillies with an ankle injury, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Wong rolled his ankle while attempting to catch a pop fly in the eighth inning of Wednesday's contest and was replaced behind the plate when the Sox took the field in the ninth. X-rays came back negative after the game, per Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, but the team will wait to see how he feels Thursday before determining his status. Any missed time for Wong would elevate Mickey Gasper into the backup catcher role.
