Daniel Coulombe: Breaking News

The Red Sox placed Coulombe on the 15-day injured list Monday with cervical spasms. It's unclear how long his neck has been bothering him, but Coulombe last pitched Friday. The lefty has yielded five runs with a 5:3 K:BB over eight innings out of the Boston bullpen this season. His spot on the roster and in the bullpen will be filled by Alec Gamboa.

Coulombe (illness) is scheduled to make a relief appearance in Monday's exhibition against the Twins, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. The Red Sox sent Coulombe home from camp Saturday after he fell ill, but the veteran reliever has apparently made a full recovery following a couple days of rest. After signing with Boston just under two weeks ago, Coulombe made just one Grapefruit League appearance, but he should still be on track to make the Red Sox's Opening Day bullpen if he checks out fine following Monday's outing.

Coulombe was sent home Saturday with an illness, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. The nature of the illness is not known. Coulombe was expected to be on the Opening Day roster, but Saturday's illness throws a speck of doubt into his availability. Boston signed him late in camp, and he made his Grapefruit League debut Thursday.
