The Giants signed Cartaya to a minor-league contract Monday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Cartaya was released by the Twins last week after going 5-for-59 with 40 strikeouts at Triple-A St. Paul. He's a former top prospect and still just 23, so the Giants felt Cartaya warranted a look on a minor-league pact.
The Twins released Cartaya on Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports. Cartaya was acquired from the Dodgers via trade over the offseason but looked completed lost at Triple-A St. Paul, going 5-for-59 with 40 strikeouts before he was placed on the development list July 1 and ultimately cut loose. The former top prospect is still just 23 years old, but his future in baseball looks murky.
The Twins outrighted Cartaya to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster. Cartaya was acquired via trade from the Dodgers over the offseason and is just 2-for-25 with an 18:4 K:BB in his first 29 plate appearances with St. Paul this season.
