Jared Oliva: Breaking News

Oliva (wrist) started at designated hitter and went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, a double, an RBI and a run scored in Triple-A Sacramento's 6-4 loss to Reno on Saturday. Oliva underwent surgery in mid-April to address a left hamate bone fracture and began his rehab assignment with the Rivers Cats on Saturday after being transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL in late April. The 30-year-old doubled in the third inning, hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and singled in the seventh before stealing two bases and scoring. The outfielder earned a spot on the Giants' Opening Day roster and is eligible to return to the big leagues in mid-June.

The Giants transferred Oliva (wrist) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. Oliva remains without an official timeline to rejoin the Giants after undergoing surgery just under two weeks ago to address a left hamate bone fracture, but his move to the 60-day IL ensures that he'll remain on the shelf through mid-June. The 30-year-old outfielder went just 1-for-7 at the dish in seven games with the Giants prior to landing on the IL and may not be guaranteed a big-league roster spot once he's activated.

Oliva underwent left hamate bone surgery Thursday in Los Angeles, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The common recovery timeline for this type of procedure is 4-to-6 weeks, so Oliva will be out until mid-May even in a best-case scenario. He is 1-for-7 at the plate this season in his limited opportunities for the Giants.
