Josh Smith: Breaking News

The Rangers placed Smith on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right glute strain. It's unclear when Smith was injured, as he played all nine innings of the Rangers' last game Sunday against the Tigers. He will be eligible for activation May 15, though the club did not reveal a timetable for Smith's return to action. Ezequiel Duran will serve as the Rangers' primary second baseman while Smith is shelved.

Smith is out of the lineup for Friday's game versus the Tigers. It's the second straight game on the bench for the 28-year-old, both of which have come against a right-handed starter. Smith has a .193/.306/.217 slash line with just two extra-base hits through 98 plate appearances this season, and it appears those struggles have started to affect his playing time. Ezequiel Duran is again starting at second base Friday for Texas.

Smith is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Yankees. For just the second time this season, the left-handed-hitting Smith is on the bench while the Rangers go up against a righty starter. Per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, Smith -- who is slashing only .193/.306/.217 this season -- will get a "couple days off" to regroup, manager Skip Schumaker said. Ezequiel Duran will cover second base and bat ninth against Yankees right-hander Elmer Rodriguez, who is making his major-league debut.
