Gilbreath cleared waivers Friday and elected free agency, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports. Gilbreath spent the vast majority of his time pitching in Triple-A this season, turning in a 7.59 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 42.2 innings at Albuquerque. Between his poor minor-league performance and the fact that he's pitched just two innings in the big leagues over the past two seasons, the 29-year-old southpaw will almost certainly have to settle for a minor-league contract during the offseason.

Lucas Gilbreath: Breaking News
Sent back to minors
The Rockies optioned Gilbreath to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday. Gilbreath's stay with the big club lasted just two days, with the reliever making his lone appearance in Friday's 9-0 loss to Pittsburgh. He'll cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to right-hander McCade Brown, who was called up from Double-A Hartford to start Sunday's series finale versus the Pirates.
Back in majors
The Rockies selected Gilbreath's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday. Gilbreath was booted off the 40-man roster back in April but has managed to return to the majors despite a 6.21 ERA and 37:20 K:BB over 37.2 innings with Albuquerque. He'll give interim manager Warren Schaeffer another lefty arm in the bullpen.
