Myles Straw: Breaking News

Straw went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Diamondbacks. Straw's homer was his first of the season. The light-hitting outfielder had just 10 long balls over parts of eight seasons prior to 2026, so he shouldn't be counted on for power, though he can add some speed. He was the lone Blue Jay with multiple hits in this contest despite coming in off the bench for Daulton Varsho (knee). Straw has filled a reserve role this season but is batting .400 (8-for-20) with three RBI, eight runs scored and a double, though he was caught on his lone steal attempt so far. If Varsho misses time, Straw would likely temporarily take over the starting job in center field.

Straw went 1-for-1 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Brewers. The depth outfielder pinch-ran for Eloy Jimenez in the top of the ninth inning and came around to tie the game at 4-4, but the game got wild from there -- Straw came to the plate in the 10th with runners on first and second with the Jays up 7-6, and he brought both home with a two-bagger into the left-field corner in what wound up a 9-7 victory. Straw has been used frequently as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, but he has just 17 plate appearances in 12 games to begin the season, batting .375 (6-for-16) with two RBI and six runs.

Straw will be on the Blue Jays' Opening Day roster, Rosie DiManno of The Toronto Star reports. It's not a big surprise, but Toronto does have something of a logjam in the outfield with Daulton Varsho, George Springer, Addison Barger, Jesus Sanchez, Nathan Lukes and Straw all confirmed for the 26-man roster, and Davis Schneider still fighting for the final bench spot. Straw does offer a platoon option in center field for Varsho, but his main usage in 2026 will likely come as a pinch runner and late-inning defensive replacement. In 299 regular-season plate appearances last year, Straw slashed .262/.313/.367 with four homers, tying his career high, and 12 steals in 13 attempts.
