Burdi retired from professional baseball May 5. Burdi signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in November and had appeared in five games with Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season before landing on the 7-day injured list April 14. The 33-year-old right-hander has a lengthy injury history, and rather than going through yet another rehab process, he opted to bring an end to his career. Burdi saw action in parts of six seasons in the big leagues from 2018 through 2025, accruing a 5.34 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 30.1 innings over 35 relief appearances across stops with the Pirates, Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox.

Nicholas Burdi: Breaking News
Cut from big-league camp
The Mets reassigned Burdi to minor-league camp Tuesday. Burdi made four appearances at the big-league level with Boston in 2025, but he was outrighted off the 40-man roster in August and then joined the Mets on a minor-league deal this offseason. The 33-year-old righty was given the chance to compete for a spot in the Mets' Opening Day bullpen during spring training, but he was cut after yielding two runs in two innings in his two Grapefruit League appearances. Expect Burdi to report to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season.
Latches on with Mets
The Mets signed Burdi to a minor-league contract Nov. 21. Burdi spun 5.1 scoreless innings with a 5:2 K:BB during his brief time with the Red Sox this season but spent most of the year at Triple-A Worcester, holding a 2.83 ERA and 45:16 K:BB across 35 frames. Slated to turn 33 in January, Burdi will likely begin the 2026 season as relief depth at Triple-A Syracuse.
