Nick Sandlin: Breaking News

The Tigers signed Sandlin to a minor-league contract Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Sandlin become a free agent last week after struggling in 8.2 innings of relief for the Angels with an 11.42 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. The right-hander entered this season with a career 3.19 ERA and 27.3 percent strikeout rate, so he's a sensible addition in hopes that he can right the ship. Sandlin is likely headed to Triple-A Toledo.

Sandlin elected to become a free agent Wednesday. Sandlin passed through waivers after being booted off the Angels' 40-man roster. Rather than accept an outright assignment, he's opted for free agency. The 29-year-old reliever held an 11.42 ERA and 1.62 WHIP across 8.2 innings during his brief time with the Halos.

The Angels optioned Sandlin to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday. Sandlin has appeared in eight games for the Angels since his contract was selected from Triple-A in mid-April, but he has struggled to an 11.42 ERA and 1.62 WHIP across 8.2 innings. He'll head back to Salt Lake to work on his command and control, with southpaw Sam Aldegheri being recalled by the Halos in a corresponding move.
