Control issues in no-decision

Schultz did not factor into Wednesday's decision against the Royals, allowing three runs on two hits and five walks while striking out three across 4.1 innings. Schultz faced the minimum number of batters through three innings but yielded three runs and five baserunners in the fourth. He was unable to finish the fifth inning to put himself in position for a decision and ended his night having tossed 38 strikes on 76 pitches while inducing just four whiffs. Schultz has given up at least three earned runs in three of six outings this season and sports a 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 26:21 K:BB across 29.1 innings. He's lined up to start next week on the road against the Mariners.

Stumbles vs. Angels

Schultz (2-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Angels, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. Five of the runs charged to Schultz came in the second inning, where the Angels strung together four straight two-out hits, highlighted by a Travis d'Arnaud three-run homer. It's the first rough outing of the season for Schultz, who had allowed just three runs over 17 innings in his previous three starts. The left-hander's ERA now sits at 4.68 through his first five starts (25 innings) with a 1.32 WHIP and 23:16 K:BB. Schultz will look to get back on track his next time out, currently scheduled to come at home next week against the Royals.

Shines again Friday

Schultz (2-1) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Padres on Friday. Schultz turned in his second straight quality start. There were a couple of downsides Friday -- his two strikeouts were a season-low mark, and he's now walked at least three batters in three of his four starts. On the positive side, he's at a 2.53 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB across 21.1 innings, with his two wins being against Atlanta and San Diego. Schultz is tentatively projected to make his next start on the road versus the Angels.
