Trevor Williams: Breaking News

Beginning mound work

Williams (elbow) began pitching off a mound at the Nationals' spring training complex this weekend, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. The veteran right-hander continues to rehab from elbow surgery with an internal brace procedure performed last July. Williams is on the 60-day IL and won't be eligible to make his 2026 debut until late May, but it's not yet clear if that's a realistic timeline. Over 82.2 innings and 17 starts in 2025, Williams stumbled to a 6.21 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB.

Starts throwing again

The Nationals announced that Williams (elbow) has resumed his throwing progression and made 25 tosses from 60 feet Wednesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Washington had shut down Williams at the onset of spring training when he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow, but a follow-up MRI apparently revealed nothing too concerning. After a brief rest period, Williams is now in the process of ramping back up again, but a clearer timeline for his 2026 debut with the Nationals won't come into focus until he resumes facing hitters and embarks on what will likely be a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. At the very least, Williams will remain shelved for the first two months of the season after Washington placed him on its 60-day injured list Feb. 10.

Rehab on pause

Williams has been shut down from throwing after experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired elbow and has been sent for an MRI, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. The veteran right-hander underwent an internal brace procedure in July rather than full Tommy John surgery, and the Nationals are being cautious with his rehab. "I heard the early read was good," manager Blake Butera said Saturday. "It's more of a 'let's make sure things are good.' Trevor feels like he's ready to roll, but we just wanted to be extra cautious and get the imaging. He's going to be with the doc today, but from what I heard, things are in a good spot." Williams will begin the season on the 60-day IL, but he could be an option for the rotation at some point this summer once he's fully recovered.
