Tyler Matzek: Everything you need to know

The Cardinals signed Matzek to a minor-league contract Thursday. The Cardinals previously inked Matzek to a minor-league deal back on June 3, but he was released this past weekend before he had made an appearance in the organization. Now that the Cardinals have brought him back on a new deal, Matzek has been assigned to Triple-A Memphis, where he will provide left-handed relief depth.

Matzek elected to become a free agent Monday. Matzek passed through waivers unclaimed after the Yankees removed him from their 40-man roster, but the reliever has declined an outright assignment and will look for a new contract. The left-hander has permitted three runs on 11 hits and five walks over 6.1 innings in the majors this season. Matzek might have to accept another minor-league contract.
