Daniel Theis: Breaking News

Waived by Oklahoma City

The Thunder waived Theis (thumb) on Thursday, Clemente Almanza of USA Today reports. The Thunder just acquired Theis along with draft compensation on Wednesday in what was essentially a salary dump. The Thunder are comfortable with their current center rotation, however. Theis is likely to draw interest from contending teams as a free agent.

Moved to OKC

The Thunder acquired Theis (thumb) and additional draft compensation from the Pelicans on Wednesday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports. The Pelicans were previously $1.4 million above the luxury tax, and Theis had an expiring $2.1 million contract, so moving him to the Thunder created more financial flexibility. In Oklahoma City, Theis will compete with Jaylin Williams for backup minutes at center behind starter Isaiah Hartenstein. Theis will likely make his debut Friday against the Raptors once the trade is made official. The veteran big man had missed the Pelicans' previous two games with a right thumb sprain, but the injury isn't believed to be anything significant.

Questionable against Denver

Theis (thumb) has been listed as questionable for Wednesday's game against the Nuggets. After missing the last two games for the Pelicans, Theis could be on track to be ruled out for a third straight game due to a right thumb sprain. The veteran big man is having a rough season in New Orleans, averaging a career-low 4.3 points per game on a career-worst 47.3 percent from the floor. If unable to play in Denver, the team could turn to Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Karlo Matkovic to help shoulder the load off the bench in the frontcourt.
