Dariq Whitehead: Breaking News

Paces team with 26 points

Whitehead totaled 26 points (11-21 FG, 4-11 3Pt), four rebounds and one assist over 39 minutes during Sunday's 132-101 loss to the Rockets. The injury-riddled Grizzlies trimmed their rotation and gave backups increased time. Whitehead made the most of his opportunity, turning in a team-high score after signing a two-way deal with the team a week ago. The Duke product never caught on in Brooklyn, but Memphis' sad state of affairs could result in a favorable environment for Whitehead. The 21-year-old certainly has the skills to play at the next level, but the offseason will determine his outlook with the parent club.

Draws first career start Friday

Whitehead will start Friday's game against the Jazz. Whitehead will make his first career start due to the Grizzlies being extremely shorthanded Friday. Over four appearances this season, he has averaged 12.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals in 30.0 minutes per contest.

Strikes for 20 in Monday's loss

Whitehead totaled 20 points (7-15 FG, 6-12 3Pt), three rebounds and one assist over 31 minutes during Monday's 142-126 loss to the Cavaliers. The third-year forward tied his career high in made three-pointers en route to a record-setting night for the Grizzlies, who tied the NBA record for most threes in a game with 29. Whitehead has been thrust into a significant role while on a 10-day contract, averaging 30.7 minutes in his first three games for Memphis and going 10-for-29 (34.5 percent) from beyond the arc.
