Getting waived by Boston

The Celtics are waiving Luis, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports. Luis had a two-way contract with Boston, but he was unable to maintain his grip on the roster during training camp. The St. John's product went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, and he'll hope to either find a home elsewhere ahead of the new year or perhaps join the G League's Maine Celtics otherwise.

Plays in preseason opener

Luis (knee) generated four points (2-2 FG) in three minutes of Wednesday's 121-103 preseason win over the Grizzlies. Luis didn't appear in a Summer League game due to left knee soreness, but he's since been traded from Utah to Boston and recovered from the injury. The undrafted rookie was effective in limited action, but he'll have a tough path to regular-season minutes with the Celtics.

Being shipped to Boston

The Celtics are acquiring Luis (knee) and two future second-round picks from the Jazz in exchange for Georges Niang, Shams Charania of ESPN reports. Luis, who went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, offers Boston some swingman depth but likely doesn't have a clear pathway to fantasy relevance to open the 2025-26 season. The St. John's product was unable to participate in the Summer League due to a knee injury, and it's unclear if the issue will carry into training camp this fall. Luis has a two-way contract as well, so most of his playing time figures to come in the G League during his rookie year.
