PHOTOS: ATF Says Rifles Used in San Bernardino Shooting Were Illegal

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has determined both assault rifles used in Wednesday’s shooting in San Bernardino were illegal, The Desert Sun reports.

The handguns were purchased legally by the gunmen.

Police released photos of the weapons, two rifles and two handguns, on Thursday. The guns were used by Syed Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, during the rampage at the Inland Regional Center and in a shootout with police.

Officers also found three pipe bombs at the scene of the shooting and 12 in the couple’s home. CBS News obtained photos of some of the explosives:
