Jake Bates Latest News
Limited by offensive explosion
Bates didn't attempt a field goal and went 6-for-6 on extra point attempts in Monday's 42-29 win over the Seahawks. Bates went without a field-goal try for a second straight week as Detroit's offense never stalled out and scored six touchdowns in the contest. Through four games, the kicker has gone 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts and 11-for-12 on extra-point kicks.
Quiet day in Arizona
Bates didn't attempt a field goal and went 2-for-3 on extra-point attempts in Sunday's 20-13 win over the Cardinals. Bates saw limited opportunities on Sunday in Arizona as Detroit's offense never stalled out in field goal range. Additionally, he hooked his second PAT try of the day in the second quarter, marking his first miss of any kind in 2024. Bates has now gone 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts and 5-for-6 on extra-point kicks through three games this season. He'll look to be more involved when the Lions take on the Seahawks at home on Monday Night Football in Week 4.
Makes three field goals in loss
Bates went 3-for-3 on field-goal tries and converted his only extra-point attempt in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Buccaneers. Bates was perfect again in Week 2, making a pair of field-goal attempts in the first half from 22 yards and 35 yards respectively. He later added a 32-yard field-goal make and a PAT in the third quarter. Through two games in 2024, Bates has gone 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts and 3-for-3 on extra-point tries.
Perfect in NFL debut
Bates went 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts and converted both of his extra-point attempts Sunday against the Rams. Bates was perfect in his NFL debut, nailing both of his field-goal tries from 25 yards and 32 yards in Detroit's victory. The kicker was thrust into a starting role after Michael Badgley (hamstring) sustained a season-ending injury in August and he's in a favorable position for fantasy value with the Lions' high-scoring offense.
Hits field goal in preseason opener
Bates made his only field-goal attempt in Thursday's 14-3 loss to the Giants. Bates was able to capitalize on his only opportunity Thursday, nailing a 53-yard field goal to give the Lions an early 3-0 lead. The 25-year-old signed with Detroit in June, and he appears to be the featured kicker with the team in 2024 after expected starter Michael Badgley (hamstring) suffered a season-ending injury.
Officially signs with Detroit
Bates officially signed a two-year contract with the Lions on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Presumably the contract is structured in such a way that the Lions could move on during training camp if Bates isn't able to replicate his trademark leg strength throughout the preseason, but the two-year deal is notable because NFL vagabonds Michael Badgley and James Turner are also on the roster. The Lions will hope Bates can replicate the success of spring football sensation Brandon Aubrey, who parlayed an excellent performance in the USFL into a record-setting rookie campaign with the Cowboys in 2023. Potentially playing in the comfy confines of Ford Field and being situated in a high-powered Detroit offense, Bates could be an immediate fantasy difference maker.
Expected to sign with Detroit
The Lions are expected to sign Bates to a contract, though a potential signing won't be official until Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Bates has built quite a bit of buzz during his time with the UFL's Michigan Panthers, as the first field goal he made with the team was a 64-yard game-winning kick March 30 that established the record for the longest field goal in league history. In fact, throughout all of professional football, the only converted field goal from a longer distance is Justin Tucker's 66-yarder for the NFL's Ravens in 2021. Bates kicked two additional field goals of 60-plus yards during the UFL regular season and made 17 of 22 tries overall. His big leg can obviously be an asset in the NFL, and he'll likely compete with Michael Badgley and James Turner for kicking duties with the Lions if the signing does indeed go through.
