The Patriots placed Schweitzer on the reserve/retired list Tuesday. Schweitzer is likely retiring despite having just signed with the team earlier in the offseason. He was in the mix to serve as the team's starting left guard, a job that will now likely go to Cole Strange.

Wes Schweitzer: Breaking News
Signs with New England
The Patriots signed Schweitzer to a one-year contract Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Schweitzer, after spending the last two seasons with the Jets, is now primed to handle a depth role at center for the Patriots. The veteran boasts ample NFL experience, currently heading into his 10th season in the league.
Placed on IR
Saleh noted that Schweitzer does have a chance to return this season. He has to sit out for at least four games and would be eligible to return against the Falcons on Dec. 3, but he could be held out beyond that date. Billy Turner took over at right guard for Schweitzer in Sunday's 13-10 win over the Giants.
