Dropped with injury designation
The Steelers cut Averett (undisclosed) from their practice squad Monday with an injury designation, per the NFL's transaction log. Averett wasn't on the Steelers' practice squad injured list; however, it appears he's dealing with some undisclosed issue after being cut Monday. The 29-year-old cornerback must now prove that he's returned to full health again before signing with another team.
Done in Pittsburgh
The Steelers released Averett (hamstring) on Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports. Pittsburgh originally brought Averett on board back in May, but as the regular season approaches, it's decided to part ways with him. Averett will have to look for another opportunity elsewhere.
Injures hamstring in preseason
Averett left Saturday's preseason contest with a hamstring injury and will not return, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. It remains to be seen if this injury will impact Averett's availability moving forward, but it will open up time for Kyler McMichael, Thomas Graham, Zyon Gilbert and Kiondre Thomas, all different corners competing for what figures to be one of the last spots available on the roster prior to the start of the regular season.
PIttsburgh bound
Averett is expected to sign a contract with the Steelers on Sunday, Chris Halicke of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Averett was brought in for a tryout during the Steelers' rookie minicamp this past weekend. He last played for the Raiders in 2022, logging 13 tackles and one pass defended over seven appearances. The 29-year-old joined the 49ers last August, but he was released with an injury designation from IR with an injury settlement just two weeks later. Averett joined up with Detroit's practice squad Oct. 10 and never appeared in any games during the 2023 campaign. He'll return to the AFC North after spending the first four years of his career with Baltimore.
