The Patriots have informed Parker that they will release him Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The report notes that Parker has been given permission to talk to other teams in the meantime. The veteran wideout is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he caught 33 passes (on 55 targets) for 394 yards in 13 regular-season games. In the wake of Parker's looming departure, JuJu Smith-Schuster (ankle), Kendrick Bourne (knee) and Demario Douglas currently head New England's WR corps, with additions to the unit presumably slated to arrive via free agency and/or the draft.
Parker hasn't seen game action since Week 8, but in the wake of the Patriots' Week 11 bye and a return to limited practices this week, the veteran wideout has a chance to return to action versus New York. Even though he didn't practice fully Wednesday through Friday, Parker could get the green light to play Sunday if he gains clearance from an independent neurologist at some point Saturday. In the seven outings he's played in this season, Parker has notched 15 catches for 158 yards and no touchdowns on 25 targets, a level of production that has thus far limited his fantasy lineup utility to deeper formats.
Parker also missed practice Wednesday, clouding his status for Sunday's game against the Commanders. If Parker is unavailable this weekend, Demario Douglas, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Jalen Reagor could profile as the Patriots' top three wideouts, with Tyquan Thornton and Kayshon Boutte potentially seeing expanded roles behind the trio.
Prior to exiting Sunday's contest, Parker had logged 23 snaps on offense, while catching one of his two targets for 14 yards. It remains to be seen if Parker will be able to gain medical clearance ahead of this coming weekend's game against the Commanders, but either way once he's able to play, the 30-year-old (who has caught one pass in each of his last three outings) could be a candidate to see added targets, given that New England's top pass catcher Kendrick Bourne reportedly tore his right ACL versus Miami.
Parker was on the receiving end of a hard hit from Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott and appeared to have trouble regaining balance after he was walked off the field following the play in question. Given that he missed multiple games in 2022 with a concussion, the Patriots' decision to quickly rule Parker out for the day comes as little surprise. Prior to his exit, Parker caught one of his two targets for 14 yards.
