Mixon has signed a three-year contract extension with the Texans, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Per Schefter, Mixon's reported deal with Houston -- which runs through 2026, according to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle -- is for $27 million and includes $13 million guaranteed. The Bengals sent the 27-year-old to the Texans in exchange for a 2024 seventh-rounder, setting the stage for Mixon to take over as the lead back in his new locale, replacing Devin Singletary, who signed on with the Giants in free agency. Also in the mix for carries for Houston will be 2022 fourth-rounder Dameon Pierce, but the team's decision to extend Mixon clearly demonstrates confidence in the 2017 second-rounder, a context that should allow him to maintain steady weekly volume in 2024.

Gets extension from Houston
Headed to Houston
The Bengals are slated to trade Mixon to the Texans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Previous reports indicated that Cincinnati intended to release Mixon, but instead the running back is in line to be dealt to Houston for a conditional seventh-round pick, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. The 27-year-old will thus fill the void created by the departure of Devin Singletary and is on track to lead a Texans backfield that also includes Dameon Pierce. In 17 regular-season games with the Bengals in 2023, Mixon had 257 carries for 1,034 yards and nine TDs to go along with 52 catches for 376 yards and three more scores.
Released by Bengals
Mixon was released by the Bengals on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. It was suspected that Mixon could be a potential cap casualty for the Bengals, and that has turned out to be the case. He spent his first seven seasons in Cincinnati and finished the 2023 campaign with 1,410 yards and 12 touchdowns from scrimmage. The veteran back turns 28-years-old in July and will now be looking for a fresh start elsewhere.
Scores TD in Week 10 loss
Mixon put together a solid performance on the ground relative to the modest amount of opportunity he saw, with the highlight a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that brought the Bengals to within a field goal. The veteran back will take a three-game touchdown streak into a Week 11 road matchup against the Ravens on Thursday night, but he's yet to top 87 rushing yards in any game this season.
Active versus Buffalo
Though Mixon was officially listed as questionable for the contest, the running back's status for Sunday night's game never appeared to be in much danger after he logged full practices both Thursday and Friday. With his active status versus Buffalo confirmed, Mixon is slated to continue to lead the Bengals' backfield in Week 9, a context that has yielded steady volume for the 2017 second-rounder this season. Through his first seven games, Mixon is averaging 16 carries for 64.7 yards and 2.7 catches for 18.1 yards, while Trayveon Williams is second among the team's RBs with a total of seven carries and four catches in that span.
Listed as questionable, expected to play
After being limited Wednesday, back-to-back uncapped sessions have Mixon trending upward ahead of Sunday night's 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff. Given that he's been able to work fully twice in a row, Mixon's Week 9 status doesn't appear in much danger despite the questionable designation, with Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer relaying that coach Zac Taylor noted Friday of Mixon that "he'll be good. He was just sore."
Solves 49ers defense in win
Mixon enjoyed rare rushing success against the 49ers' normally stout front seven, with the veteran looking explosive on multiple runs throughout the afternoon. Mixon came into the contest averaging just 3.8 yards per carry for the season, but his yardage total Sunday was his highest yet in 2023. The seven-year pro also recorded his second touchdown of the season on a five-yard rush with 2:54 remaining that sealed the victory for Cincinnati, and he'll head into a Week 9 home matchup against the Bills next Sunday night with multiple receptions in three straight contests as well.
