Julio Jones: Breaking News

Announces retirement

Jones (concussion) announced his retirement from pro football on social media Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The sixth overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft, Jones spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Falcons, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards seven times and earning a pair of first-team All-Pro nods during that span. His final three campaigns were split between Tennessee (2021), Tampa Bay (2022) and Philadelphia (2023), as he remained unsigned following that final stop. Overall, Jones' 13,703 career receiving yards rank 16th in NFL history, and the rest of his resume suggests a strong case for the Pro Football Hall of Fame at some point.

Finds end zone

Jones remains in a small role for the Eagles, playing 15 snaps this week after playing 16 in his season debut. The 34-year-old showed he still has value in the red zone, holding onto the ball through a big hit after Jalen Hurts found him in a tight window. The Eagles may have viewed him as a red zone specialist when they elected to bring him in, which does boost his fantasy value, but his total volume of snaps and targets will likely remain low enough to make him unappealing in most leagues.

Elevated for second straight week

Jones was able to haul in his lone target for three yards in the Eagles' 31-17 win over the Dolphins in Week 7, but played just 16 offensive snaps. He was signed to the team's practice squad on Oct. 17 after Quez Watkins (hamstring) was placed on IR to provide depth behind A.J. Brown -- who Jones played with in Tennessee in 2021 -- DeVonta Smith and Olamide Zaccheaus. With another week of practice and reps under Jones' belt, the 2011 first-round pick could see more opportunities Sunday against the Commanders.
