Staying in Washington

Allen (ankle) signed a reserve/future contract with the Commanders on Tuesday. Allen spent most of the 2024 regular season on the Commanders' practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp in late August. He wasn't elevated to the active roster for a game, and he ended the season on the practice squad injured list due to an ankle injury during practice in mid-December. The 24-year-old running back has yet to play in an NFL regular-season games since signing with Washington as an undrafted free agent in May of 2023.
Lands on IR due to ankle injury

The Commanders placed Allen (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday. Allen suffered an ankle injury during practice this past Wednesday and was spotted with a walking boot and crutches while leaving the team's facility Friday, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. Allen was on the Commanders' practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster and the end of training camp, but he wasn't elevated for a regular-season game. The 24-year-old will shift his attention to recovering from his ankle injury and to be healthy enough to compete for a roster spot in 2025.
Sticks around with Washington

Allen signed with the Commanders' practice squad Wednesday. Allen received plenty of praise during training camp from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who compared the 24-year-old wideout's skillset to 49ers' Deebo Samuel. Allen didn't show that level of production during the Commanders' three preseason games, when he accrued just three catches (on four targets) for 24 yards while adding 17 rushing yards on six carries. Allen spent all of 2023 on Washington's practice squad, but he has yet to play a snap in a regular-season game.
Let go by Washington

Allen was waived by the Commanders on Tuesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports. Allen was unable to make the team despite the recent trade of Jahan Dotson, a relatively open receiver room behind Terry McLaurin and a Deebo Samuel comparison from Washington's offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury, almost a week ago. The wide receiver had four carries for 15 yards and one catch for 12 yards during the preseason.
Draws Deebo comp from OC

Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury mentioned that Allen's "explosive" traits remind him of Deebo Samuel, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports. Listed as a wide receiver, Allen has been getting reps out of the backfield in Washington. "He's a guy that we could see similar -- I'm not comparing -- but Deebo type role to move him around, do different things," Kingsbury said, via John Keim of ESPN.com. "He has that type of explosiveness and ability to play in the slot or you can hand it to him." Allen went undrafted out of UCLA last year and spent much of 2023 on the Commanders' practice squad. He has four carries for 15 yards and a fumble this preseason, adding one catch for 12 yards on two targets. Washington's wideout room is wide open behind Terry McLaurin following Thursday's trade of Jahan Dotson to the Eagles.
