Re-works deal with Miami
The Dolphins and Mostert have agreed to terms on a re-worked deal that includes an extension through the 2025 season, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mostert's new deal with the Dolphins is worth up to $9.1 million over two years. The running back, who turns 32 next month, is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he ran for 1,012 yards on 209 carries in 15 regular-season games, while combining for 21 TDs (18 rushing and three receiving). This coming season, Mostert is set to reprise his key role in a Miami backfield that also includes dynamic 2023 third-rounder De'Von Achane, as well as Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks.
Back at practice
Mostert didn't practice Wednesday, so the running back's return to Thursday's session has him moving in the right direction ahead of Sunday's game against the Commanders. Miami's looming injury report is slated to reveal Mostert's official participation level as he mixed into drills again.
Should remain lead back sans Achane
In the three games before Achane landed on injured reserve Oct. 11, he and Mostert had been splitting work out of the backfield. Mostert proceeded to see more than 50 percent of the snaps on offense and averaged 13.8 touches while Achane was sidelined over the subsequent four contests, and he then handled a 78 percent snap share and 22 carries - both season highs - with Achane being limited to just three snaps in his return to action in this past Sunday's win over Las Vegas. With Achane back on the sideline for Week 12 and with another running back in Salvon Ahmed (foot) ruled out for the season, Jeff Wilson should step in as the Dolphins' No. 2 option after being inactive last week. Mostert still appears likely to dominate the backfield work for as long as Friday's contest remains competitive.
Set to face Jets
Though Mostert is managing ankle and knee issues and was listed as limited on Thursday's practice estimate, he'll be available for Friday's contest. Meanwhile, De'Von Achane (knee) is listed as questionable, and if he's unavailable versus New York, Jeff Wilson and Darrynton Evans would be in line to work behind Mostert in Miami's Week 12 backfield.
Remains limited Wednesday
Mostert has appeared on both of the Dolphins' first two Week 12 practice reports as a limited participant due to the pair of injuries, but the team seems to be capping his reps as a matter of load management rather than as a result of any concern about his availability for Friday's game against the Jets. Instead, the status of fellow running back De'Von Achane (knee) -- who was a limited practice participant Wednesday -- appears to be more up in the air than Mostert's as Friday's game approaches. If Achane isn't able to play Friday, Jeff Wilson would serve as the top understudy to Mostert, who carried a season-high 22 times in this past Sunday's win over the Raiders.
Not practicing Monday
Monday's practice is unofficial, so the Dolphins won't release an injury report to confirm Mostert's status, but it's possible he's simply benefiting from a veteran rest day. Mostert appeared fully healthy entering the team's bye, but with De'Von Achane (knee) having been designated for a return from IR, the backfield situation warrants close monitoring heading into Sunday's game against the Raiders. If both Mostert and Achane are cleared to play, they will stand to split time as effective co-starters.
Bright spot in Miami offense
Miami was unable to get their typically explosive passing attack going against Kansas City, and much of their success came from Mostert. He accounted for one of the team's two gains of more than 20 yards, as well as a 13-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Mostert also dominated work on the ground and should see his volume increase when the Dolphins play from ahead.
Scores TD with limited opportunity
Mostert turned in a much less efficient effort than usual on the ground and was surprisingly uninvolved in the air attack. However, he posted a serviceable fantasy performance anyhow thanks to his one-yard touchdown rush midway through the third quarter. Mostert still comfortably paced the ground attack in carries despite Jeff Wilson seeing his rush attempts climb to five in his second game of the campaign, and the workload split between the two will bear monitoring in a Week 9 showdown against the Chiefs in Germany.
Returns to practice
After he missed Wednesday's practice, Mostert's return to the field a day later bodes well for his chances of being available for Sunday's game against the Patriots. The Dolphins' upcoming injury report will clarify whether Mostert was limited or worked fully Thursday.
