Penning re-signed to Los Angeles on a one-year, $4.5 million contract Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Penning will get a chance to continue his development with the Chargers after having joined the team mid-season via trade from the Saints in 2025. The 2022 first-round pick started four of his seven appearances with Los Angeles last season and will be a candidate to contribute at both guard and tackle in 2026.
The Chargers acquired Penning from the Saints on Tuesday in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. A 2022 first-round selection of the Saints, Penning began his career as an offensive tackle, but he had been serving primarily as New Orleans' starting left guard in 2025. After acquiring Penning, the Chargers could revisit using him at tackle, where the team has lost both of its projected starters -- Rashawn Slater (kneecap) and Joe Alt (ankle) -- to season-ending injuries. Penning is in the final season of his rookie deal and is set to become a free agent this spring.
Penning (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Giants. Penning missed the first practice of the week due to an ankle injury. He ended the week with back-to-back limited sessions, and the 2022 first-rounder has been cleared to play Sunday and start at left guard.
