Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray found out on Monday that he would need to have surgery on his hand. Although the extent of the injury may not necessarily be a big blow for big D, it could affect their Week 16 game plan against the Indianapolis Colts in their final home game of the season.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Murray had post-game x-rays on his hand after Sunday night’s game against the Eagles.

The injury occurred late in Sunday night’s 38-27 victory against Philadelphia. Immediately after the game, Murray had x-rays done and believed he’d be all right.

2. Murray’s injury did not affect his performance Sunday.

He finished the game with 81 yards on 31 carries — a high carry total, and it was just his third game this season he finished under 100 yards rushing.

3. Murray specifically broke the fourth metacarpal bone in his left hand.

This might have been the play where Murray suffered the injury.

ESPNDallas reported that he broke the fourth metacarpal in his left hand, which is the bone that is a part of the ring finger.

4. Murray has not been ruled out for Week 16 against Indianapolis yet.

The hand injury is minor, and Murray should not be out for an extended period of time, if at all.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones confirmed on KRLD Monday that Murray would need the surgery for the injury, but also said that the running back has not been ruled out of the Week 16 home game against the Colts.

“Obviously. DeMarco Murray has a broken bone in his hand,” Jones told KRLD-FM. “At the same time, he hasn’t been ruled out. It’s not something that if it responds well after surgery today, that he can’t come back and play this weekend. It’s probably a tough expectation to think that he can, but we’ll see.”

5. Murray’s backups are Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle.

In case Murray can’t go, Dunbar and Randle would most likely see a 50-50 split in workload. Dunbar was the primary backup in Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Randle was already notoriously in the news this season when he was arrested for shoplifting back in October.
