John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) has won the 113th edition of Paris-Roubaix, crossing the line in a time of 5h 49m 51s at an average speed of 43.5km. The 26-year-old entered the Velodrome in Roubaix with a group of six other riders including Zdenk Stybar, Lars Boom and Greg van Avaermart, and adds The Hell of the North to his victory in Milan-San Remo earlier this year.

Degenkolb becomes the first German to win the race since the very first edition back in 1896.

The race was ultimately one of disappointment for Bradley Wiggins, who failed to make the final selection in his last race for Team Sky. Wiggins tried a solo break with 20 kilometres to go but was quickly reeled in by the peleton and failed to animate the race thereafter, rolling into the veledrome in 18th place. He will now turn his attention to the track, preparing for an Hour Record attempt and the 2016 Olympics. Wiggins’ Team Sky teammate Luke Row finished in 8th.

Preview

This Sunday, 200 riders will tackle the 113th edition of Paris-Roubaix: The Hell of the North. 162 miles stand between those starting in Paris and the finish line within the Roubaix velodrome, including 27 sectors of harsh, jagged cobbles that will batter and bruise riders deep to their core. The weather is set to be fair, with just a 30% chance of rain forecast, likely resulting in a repeat of last year’s high average speeds and low attrition rate.

The race marks the last with Team Sky for Sir Bradley Wiggins, who’s looking to become the first Tour de France winner to conquer Paris-Roubaix in 35 years. Sky have enjoyed a strong “cobbled classics” campaign to date, with victories at E3 Harelbeke and Omloop het Nieuwsblad.
