Luke Kuechly isn’t just the best linebacker in Carolina. He may be one of the best linebackers in the NFL. So it hurts even more to see a talented player like that head to the locker room before halftime.

Kuechly left the Panthers’ opening day game in Jacksonville late in the 2nd quarter. Kuechly is a hard hitter, and appeared stunned after laying a hit on a Jacksonville running back. Kuechly stayed on the ground momentarily, and went with trainers to the locker room with his helmet off under his own power.

It could just be that Kuechly was shaken, and headed back because of the proximity to halftime. If Kuechly is unable to return, however, it will be a massive blow to the Panthers moving forward. Kuechly has been impressive since stepping into the NFL, recording over 300 tackles in his first three seasons.

Final diagnosis: concussion. Luke Kuechly is out for the day.
