Eli Manning and the New York Giants have a tailor-made scenario, but a challenge to win against the spread vs the San Francisco 49ers in the Sunday Night Football betting matchup.
The host Giants are listed as 7-point favorites against the 49ers at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. New York is 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS and could easily be better with some elementary clock management in a Week 1 last-second loss against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants are 9-1 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games at MetLife Stadium where they were favored by seven or more points. Manning tossed three TD passes during the Giants’ Week 4 road win against the defensively stout Buffalo Bills and has been intercepted only once in four games. Star WR Odell Beckham has also become a trusted third-down target.
The Giants’ bend-but-don’t-break defense has parlayed having the best average starting field position in the NFL into being first in fewest rushing yards allowed per game, fifth in interceptions per drive and ninth in points per drive. With defenders such as CB Prince Amukamara, the Giants can make life tough for struggling 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.
New York is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games against San Francisco according to the OddsShark NFL Database, which is certainly a weaker team than it was last season.
San Francisco, which is 1-3 SU and ATS, is also 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games. Establishing a running game with RB Carlos Hyde in order to avoid obvious passing downs might be difficult against the Giants. The 49ers’ pass protection also foundered in a Week 4 home loss against Green Bay, as Kaepernick was sacked six times on only 31 dropbacks.
The 49ers’ defense is among the NFL laggards in points, yards allowed and takeaways per opposing drive.
The total for Sunday night’s San Francisco vs. New York betting matchup is set at 43 points at the sportsbooks. The total has gone UNDER in eight of San Francisco’s last 11 games. The total has gone OVER in four of the Giants’ last six games.
