LSU freshman forward Ben Simmons is the favorite to be the first overall selection in next month’s 2016 NBA Draft at the Barclays Center at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The most recent draft odds update at one sportsbook had Simmons set as the -500 favorite to be the top choice this year, followed by Duke freshman forward Brandon Ingram at +300, and The Field at +2500. Another shop had Simmons as the 4/9 favorite versus The Field at 7/4.
And it’s the Philadelphia 76ers who hold the top pick in the NBA Draft thanks to their lottery victory last week. The Sixers put up the worst record in the entire league this past season, producing an ugly 10-72 mark for a .122 win percentage. That had them seven games behind the Los Angeles Lakers, who wrapped up the Kobe Bryant Retirement Tour at just 17-65.
The Lakers pick second in this year’s NBA Draft, while the Boston Celtics have the third overall selection – Boston acquired that pick via the trade with the Brooklyn Nets where they dealt away Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Brooklyn finished with a 21-61 record this past season, while Boston gets to add a top prospect to a team that made the playoffs at 48-34.
That top prospect, though, is unlikely to be Simmons unless there are some twists and turns at the Barclays Center on June 23. The native of Melbourne, Australia, who moved to Florida for high school and was then recruited by LSU, averaged 19.2 points per game and 11.8 rebounds per game last year for the Tigers – who did not make the NCAA Tournament field.
Ingram averaged 17.3 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game last year for the Blue Devils, who lost in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament to the Oregon Ducks as a No. 4 seed. Ingram was also named the 2016 Rookie of the Year for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
