Jose Fernandez Dead: MLB Pays Tribute on Twitter

On Sunday morning, news broke that Miami Marlins All-Star pitcher Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident. The right-hander, who made a dangerous journey from Cuba to the U.S. at age 15, was quickly remembered by colleagues and those who knew him on Twitter and social media.

The Marlins quickly announced that todays game against the Atlanta Braves has been postponed.

“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time,” the Marlins said in a statement.

“All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred added. “He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.”

The Miami Dolphins are holding a moment of silence for Fernandez before kickoff.

The Tampa Bay Rays also announced that Red Sox DH David Ortiz asked the organization to cancel a pre-planned celebration for his final game at Tropicana Field.
