Towards the end of a match between Charlotte and Bayley at Royal Rumble this evening, the Women’s Champion began bleeding from the mouth seemingly at random. What happened? When did she get hurt?

Looking back at the footage, Charlotte’s bleeding is first visible when the camera cuts to her after she puts Bayley into a figure eight. But it seems that the injury came when Bayley performed an elbow drop from the top rope; as she lands, her forearm collides with Charlotte’s face. This was the only move that was performed prior to the point that Charlotte’s bleeding became apparent.

It’s also possible Bayley accidentally hit Charlotte while Charlotte was initially trying to put her into the figure eight. The two struggle for a second there, but watching that moment frame by frame, it really doesn’t seem that any part of Bayley actually makes contact with Charlotte’s face, although there are a few frames where the front of Charlotte is not visible because of the way the camera is positioned. Either way, the flying elbow is the most likely explanation for the blood.

This is the second time in a week that there has been some unexpected blood during a WWE event; there was also a lot of confusion on Monday Night Raw last week when Goldberg started bleeding out of nowhere even though he didn’t even have a match. As it turns out, he had hit his head on a door a bit too hard on his way into the ring.

A few minutes after Charlotte began bleeding, she pinned Bayley and retained her WWE Women’s Championship.
