Tonight at Payback, Finn Balor declared his intention to challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.
This took place during a Miz TV segment that aired in the Payback pre-show. When The Miz asked what Balor was going to do next, Balor said that he is going to get his title back, referring to the Universal Championship.
The Miz then asked if Balor knew who the current Universal Champion is, and Balor says that yes, he knows that it’s Brock Lesnar.
Finn Balor, of course, was forced to vacate the Universal Championship last August, one day after winning it at SummerSlam; he was legitimately injured during that match, and Kevin Owens ultimately won the championship after Balor vacated it.
Owens then lost the title to Goldberg, who lost the title to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.
Finn Balor returned earlier this month, but this is the first time that he has made it known that he’s going back after his Universal Championship title.
Brock Lesnar is not expected to defend his Universal Championship title until Great Balls of Fire in July. However, it has been rumored that this match will be between Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman, so it’s not clear when Finn Balor might have the chance to go after the Universal Championship.
In fact, recent episodes of Monday Night Raw have set up the fact that Finn Balor will soon feud with Bray Wyatt, who does not hold any championship at the moment.
