On SmackDown Live tonight, the participants of the 2017 Money in the Bank ladder match were announced.
8:49 – In another Fashion Files segment, Breezango enter Shane McMahon’s office to turn in their badges and toy guns. Shane tells them that they’re not real cops. But he tells them that they’ve proven that they belong here, and so tonight, Tyler Breeze will take on Jey Uso, and Fandango will take on Jimmy Uso in single’s competition.
8:47 – Backstage, AJ Styles tells Shinsuke Nakamura to follow his lead in their match tonight. Shinsuke says that they will be a team tonight, but at Money in the Bank, he’s going to win the contract and turn the house that AJ built into his playground.
The six people who will be a part of the ladder match this year are AJ Styles, Baron Corbin, Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Kevin Owens.
This was announced on the May 23rd episode of SmackDown Live. As part of the opening segment, Kevin Owens actually entered as the fifth participant, but Shane McMahon quickly took the mic and told Owens that he wouldn’t be in the match. However, Owens argued that he deserves a spot in the match, and Shane finally agreed and added him.
Three of these wrestlers have never participated in a Money in the Bank ladder match before. AJ Styles never has, although he did have a match at Money in the Bank last year; it was him against John Cena and it ended with Styles winning thanks to the help of The Club.
Shinsuke Nakamura also will be a first to the Money in the Bank ladder match, as he just recently made his debut on SmackDown Live and has only wrestled once: in a match against Dolph Ziggler at Backlash.
In addition, Baron Corbin will be new to the ladder match. He had a match at Money in the Bank last year against Dolph Ziggler, which he won.
Speaking of Dolph Ziggler, Ziggler has, of course, participated in the Money in the Bank ladder match a few times, and he won the match in 2012. In 2016, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens both participated in the Money in the Bank ladder match, but both were unsuccessful.
In the Money in the Bank ladder match, the objective is to climb a ladder and grab a contract that is suspended from the ceiling. This gives the wrestler the right to “cash in” the contract any time over the next year to get themselves a match against the WWE Champion.
Money in the Bank 2017 takes place on June 18th, 2017.
