This week on Monday Night Raw, a commercial aired which said that John Cena will return to the WWE on July 4th as a free agent. So what exactly does this mean? What does Cena being a free agent entail?

Well, the promo fits with a previous report from PWInsider that when Cena comes back to the WWE, he will be able to appear both on the red brand and the blue brand. He’s making his return on an episode of SmackDown Live, thoughnot Monday Night Raw.

When we last saw John Cena, he was a part of the SmackDown Live brand. But Cena was away during the superstar shakeup in April, and so the premise of the “free agent” storyline will likely be that since Cena was not around for the shake up, he’s not firmly committed to SmackDown Live, and Raw could potentially lure him over.

It’s unclear whether John Cena will remain on the blue brand going forward or if he might switch over to team red, but for now, it seems like he’s going to go back and forth between both shows for a bit. This week on Raw, it was said that Roman Reigns would soon be unveiling his plans for SummerSlam, and these two announcements back-to-back caused some fans to speculate that we’ll see a Cena vs. Reigns match this August. However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer later reported that there’s no connection between these two things and that Cena and Reigns won’t be wrestling anytime soon.

Still, it seems likely that John Cena will remain on SmackDown Live for now, if only because he’s approaching a record-breaking 17th WWE championship reign. This would put him past Ric Flair, who Cena is currently tied with for most world championship reigns. But the Universal Championship seems to be firmly in the hands of Brock Lesnar until WrestleMania next year, meaning Cena would have to stay on SmackDown Live to go after the World Championship.

The last we saw John Cena, he was feuding with The Miz, who has since been moved to Monday Night Raw. Cena, of course, also proposed to his real-life girlfriend Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33.
