Ex-Strikeforce champ says he’s owed more than $150,000
He’s still seven weeks away from what will be the biggest fight of his career, but Alistair Overeem is once again making headlines outside the cage.
Overeem, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champ, will debut in the UFC against former champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 on Dec. 30. But Wednesday, TMZ reported Overeem has filed a lawsuit against his former management team, citing a failure by Golden Glory to pay him money owed him on his deal.
Overeem made news in July when he was removed from Strikeforce’s heavyweight tournament, then was released from his Strikeforce deal by Zuffa – while he was the promotion’s heavyweight champ. But in September, he signed with the UFC for a fight against Lesnar, and soon after announced his split from the Netherlands-based Golden Glory team he had been a mainstay with.
In a statement he released at the time of the split, he cited a “breach of trust” in the fighter-management relationship. That breach has apparently culminated in the civil suit.
TMZ’s report says the suit, filed in Los Angeles County, claims Golden Glory owes Overeem more than $150,000, including a bonus he was supposed to receive when he signed with the UFC in September.
Overeem, in a new online episode of his documentary series “The ‘Reem,” detailed several vague reasons behind the split with Golden Glory, including “two years of small dissatisfactory points.” He also announced the move of his training camp to Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas.
