Terence “Bud” Crawford has little else to accomplish in his legendary career after defeating Canelo Alvarez in the Netflix fight prompting some speculation that the boxer could retire. Crawford is a perfect 42-0 after posting the biggest win of his career.
Minutes after upsetting Alvarez, Netflix’s Max Kellerman asked Crawford if fans had just witnessed the last fight of his career. Crawford remained non-committal about his future.
“Like I said before, I don’t know,” Crawford responded during the September 14, 2025, post-match interview. “I got to sit down with my team, and we’re going talk about it.”
Here’s what you need to know about Crawford’s future in boxing.
Who Will Terence Crawford Fight Next?
If Crawford chooses to defend his crown, it remains to be seen who the star would fight next. Following the fight, Alvarez left the door open to a potential rematch, but it is unclear if Crawford shares this same desire.
“But it seems Crawford’s next fight could actually come in the division he skipped over to reach super-middleweight,” Independent’s Alex Pattle detailed in a September 14, story titled, “Who will Terence Crawford fight next after legacy-defining win over Canelo Alvarez?”
“At middleweight, the champions are: Janibek Alimkhanuly, who holds the WBO and IBF belts; Carlos Adames, the WBC champion; and Erislandy Lara, the WBA title holder,” Pattle continued.
“It was also at middleweight that Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn clashed in April, and where the Britons will meet again in November. The winner of that contest could face Crawford in a high-profile match-up.”
The Case for Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford to Retire
Crawford has a chance to ride off into the sunset without ever having tasted a loss while defeating one of the top boxers of this era. There is a strong case to be made for Crawford to retire, providing fans with one of the best fights of his career while showing an elite ability to fight in multiple weight classes.
“With the win, Crawford enters an exclusive club as the first men’s boxer in the four-belt era to earn undisputed status in three weight classes (junior welterweight, welterweight and super middleweight),” ESPN’s Andreas Hale wrote in a September 14, story titled, “After defeating Canelo, is Crawford the best fighter of his generation?”
“If he decides to hang up the gloves after Saturday’s performance (and who could blame him if he did) he would retire with a 42-0 record with 31 knockouts, a five-division world champion (undisputed in three) and a victory over the man widely considered the face of boxing with relative ease.”
Canelo Alvarez Left the Door Open to Retirement Following Loss vs. Terence Crawford
Alvarez was also asked about his future and whether the star wants to box again following his rare loss. The boxer played coy while leaving the door open for retirement.
Alvarez previously indicated that he will not fight past the age of 37, which would potentially give the star an additional two years in the ring.
“My body is fine, I can keep fighting for several more years,” Alvarez said back in May, per SecondsOut.com. “37 is the age I want to retire, not for boxing to retire me.
“I don’t need to do it for the money or legacy, I said I was going to retire at 37 and I’m sure I will.”
