With spring practice now complete, head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff are shifting focus toward summer workouts. But the quarterback competition between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell remains unresolved and highly competitive.
According to reporting from Charlie Potter of BamaOnline, both signal-callers exited spring practice essentially neck-and-neck.
Kalen DeBoer’s Clear Challenge to Alabama QBs
While no starter has been named, DeBoer made one thing very clear: improvement over the summer will decide this race.
Speaking at the Regions Tradition Pro-Am, DeBoer emphasized that both quarterbacks must take a significant leap before fall camp:
“As good as they did this spring, I’d expect for them to take another big leap here in the summer.”
That expectation isn’t new. DeBoer referenced the development of Ty Simpson last year, noting how much progress was made between spring and fall.
The message is simple: spring performance got Mack and Russell to this point, but summer development and strong performances in fall camp will win the job.
Depth in the Quarterback Room Remains Elite
Even beyond the top two, Alabama’s quarterback room is loaded with talent, with the likes of freshmen Jett Thomalla and Tayden-Evan Kaawa adding depth to the 2026 roster.
Looking ahead, the Tide have already secured commitments from elite 2027 quarterbacks Elijah Haven and Trent Seaborn.
That pipeline is no accident. Since taking over in 2024, DeBoer has prioritized recruiting and developing quarterbacks at a high level, securing a five-star quarterback in three straight recruiting classes.

Beyond talent, DeBoer highlighted something just as important: the culture inside the quarterback room.
Rather than division, the competition has created cohesion between Mack and Russell.
“They’re real pros… the way they interact, it’s a credit to them and their character.”
