After a brutal 2025 college football season for Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels, there have been some rumblings about the legendary head coach’s future.

Immediately after the season, there were some rumblings that North Carolina could choose to go in a different direction. That didn’t happen. Shortly after, Belichick was talked about as a potential coaching candidate the NFL teams could consider.

Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan specifically mentioned the Buffalo Bills as a possible fit for Belichick to return to the professional ranks.

“I thought this could have happened three years ago, and everybody looked at me like I had three heads of the guy that I thought they would … try to make a move for was actually Bill Belichick,” Ryan said.

Now, as the Bills’ coaching search has progressed, a new update has been shared about the team’s level of interest in considering Belichick for the open position.

NFL Insider Weighs in on Bill Belichick, Bills Rumblings

According to a report from Pro Football Talk NFL insider Mike Florio on January 25, Buffalo has shown no interest in considering Belichick for its head coaching job.

“The Bills are casting a wide net when it comes to searching for their next head coach. But not wide enough to encompass the man who won six Super Bowls with a division rival,” Florio wrote.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Bills are not interested in Bill Belichick.”

At the end of the day, Belichick is now 73 years old. Bringing him onboard would not be a long-term move for the Bills. They would likely prefer a younger candidate who could lead the team forward for years to come.

Belichick also turned in a rough all-around coaching performance for the Tar Heels in 2025. His team finished with a 4-8 record. North Carolina did not quality for a bowl game.

While his name will always carry a lot of weight due to his career accomplishments, Belichick’s days of being an elite NFL head coach are likely over. His days as an elite college coach haven’t even begun.

What’s Next for North Carolina & Bill Belichick?

It appears that Belichick will return for a second season as the head coach of the Tar Heels. Both parties are hopeful that things can improve from year one.

The idea that Belichick was going to come in and turn North Carolina into a contender right away was always farfetched. He has a lot of work to do to bring in the right talent to win at a high level.

That being said, the Tar Heels aren’t going to be happy with a repeat performance from this season. If Belichick fails to take the program a step forward in 2026, a change could be made.

Belichick may be one of the best NFL head coaches of all-time, but he needs to produce results next season. Hopefully, the off-the-field noise surrounding him with his young girlfriend Jordon Hudson will also cool down.

Right now, it appears that North Carolina will hold onto the hope that Belichick can begin turning things around in year two as the program’s head coach.
