The Indiana Hoosiers and head coach Curt Cignetti are busy making their final preparations for Monday night’s showdown against the Miami Hurricanes in the national championship game.
It’s the first time Indiana has ever had a chance to play for a championship. In just two years, Cignetti has turned a basketball school with a non-factor football program into a football school.
Due to the success that Cignetti has found throughout his first two years at Indiana, a lot of rumors have been circling about his future. With quite a few prominent NFL head coaching jobs available, he has been talked about as a potential candidate to jump to the professional level.
With that being said, Cignetti did not stand by and allow the rumors to grow louder. He has spoken out with honesty about his potential NFL future.
As shared by Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports, Cignetti made it clear that he isn’t interested in making the jump to the NFL and leaving the Hoosiers.
“I’m not an NFL guy. I made that decision a long time ago,” Cignetti said. “I’ve always been a college football guy.”
This Is the Curt Cignetti News the Indiana Hoosiers Needed
Heading into the national championship game on Monday night, the last thing that Indiana wanted was to have question marks about Cignetti’s future.
Cignetti clearly had no interest in letting those rumors circulate either. Speaking out now rather than later is a clear-cut promise to his players that he’s there to stay.
Earlier this season, Cignetti agreed to a lucrative long-term deal that will keep him with the Hoosiers for years to come. He signed an eight-year contract that will run through the 2033 season. That contract averages out to paying him around $11.6 million annually.
Now, Indiana can be fully focused on the task ahead. Beating Miami to win it all this season would put the Hoosiers in the conversation among the best teams of all-time.
So far during the College Football Playoff, Indiana has dominated its opponents. The Hoosiers defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide by a final score of 38-3 in the Rose Bowl and followed that up with a 56-22 blowout win over the Oregon Ducks in the Peach Bowl.
Curt Cignetti Has Become One of the Top Head Coaches in College Football
In just two years, Cignetti has made his mark on the college football landscape. He is one of the clear-cut top head coaches in the nation.
Since taking over the Indiana job last season, he has led the program to a 26-2 record. He led the Hoosiers to the College Football Playoff in his first season last year and is now playing for a national championship.
Already, Cignetti has found massive success in the transfer portal. He was able to bring in both quarterback Josh Hoover and wide receiver Nick Marsh, among other top talents.
Not only are Indiana and Cignetti national championship contenders this season, the program looks like its here to stay. With Cignetti sticking around, the Hoosiers should be a contender once again in 2026.
