Former Michigan Wolverines star quarterback J.J. McCarthy was expected to be the clear-cut franchise quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings after the team selected him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
While the talent has always been there for McCarthy, his rookie season got off to a brutal start.
McCarthy suffered a knee injury during preseason action that ended his season. He missed out on valuable development time before entering his second year as the Vikings’ starting quarterback.
Unfortunately, his first season with Minnesota did not go as planned. More injuries hit McCarthy and he was unable to find a rhythm. When he was on the field, he went through a lot of ups and downs.
Keeping that in mind, his future has been relatively unknown. A new update has been shared by Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell that gives reason for concern.
“I think there has to be (competition at quarterback),” O’Connell said. “I think that’s what’s gonna make everybody better in that room. It’s gonna be what makes our entire offense thrive through that competition.”
Taking a Look Back at J.J. McCarthy’s Time With Michigan
During his college career, McCarthy was able to find a lot of success with the Wolverines. In his final season before being drafted by Minnesota, he was able to lead Michigan to a national championship under Jim Harbaugh.
When all was said and done with the Wolverines, McCarthy completed 67.6 percent of his career pass attempts for 6,226 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also picked up 632 yards and 10 more touchdowns on the ground.
He will not be forgotten in Ann Arbor anytime soon. Since he left, Michigan has struggled to find a legitimate replacement.
Even though his NFL career has gotten off to a slow start, Wolverines fans will continue rooting him on with the same energy they had when he was in college.
What’s Next for McCarthy in the NFL?
Thankfully, McCarthy has never been one to shy away from competition. This news may sting a bit, but it’s also understandable.
At the end of the day, the Vikings struggled in 2025. McCarthy was unable to stay on the field due to injuries and he wasn’t able to show enough to prove that he can be the guy moving forward. Minnesota has to protect against the possibility that 2026 could bring more of the same.
McCarthy’s talent is what will get him through. Every Michigan fan knows what he’s capable of becoming. He simply needs to stay healthy.
Despite O’Connell’s comments, the Vikings are still clearly hoping that McCarthy can be the long-term option under center. Bringing in another quarterback would simply add fuel to his fire.
In his first season starting at the NFL level, McCarthy played in 10 games. He completed just 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while also racking up 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
There is clearly still work for the young quarterback to do. However, the former Wolverines star will put in the work this offseason and come back an improved player next season.
