Lucas Carneiro has rapidly become one of college football’s most talked-about kickers–not just for his booming leg and clutch performances in big moments, but for the family story that helped shape his unconventional path to the SEC stage with the Ole Miss Rebels.
From a soccer upbringing to support from parents who wouldn’t take “no” for an answer, Carneiro’s early life is just as compelling as his on-field exploits.
Here are five facts about his family and journey that help explain how he got here.
1. Lucas Grew Up in a Sports-First Household
Carneiro was born on May 25, 2004 in Boston, but moved to North Carolina when he was about 2 years old. His family placed a high value on athletic participation. His parents, Jackson and Maren Carneiro, encouraged Lucas to try multiple sports rather than specialize too early. His father actually served as his assistant soccer coach when Lucas got to high school, giving him additional mentorship and support in competition and training.
That athletic diversity in his youth gave Lucas a strong foundation in leg strength, coordination and competitive instinct–tools that would serve him well when he eventually transitioned from soccer to football.
2. His Mom Pushed Him Into Football
Perhaps the most defining family moment in Lucas’s early life came not on the soccer pitch, but on the gridiron. His mother was insistent that he give football, specifically as a kicker, a serious look.
“My parents always wanted me to play other sports growing up just to experience them,” Lucas said. “My freshman year of high school, they really wanted me to kick for the football team, but I got myself out of that.
“But my sophomore year, my mom said, ‘Nope. Nope. Not again.’ She showed up at school with my cleats. I tried out, made the team and I haven’t looked back. By my senior year, I decided to give this football thing a try.”
3. Brother Liam Is Following in His Footsteps
Athletic talent clearly runs in the Carneiro family. Lucas isn’t the only kicker in the household; his younger brother, Liam, has also made a name for himself as a standout kicker at Community School of Davidson, the same school Lucas attended. He is on track to graduate in 2027.
According to CSD Spartans Football, Liam “earned Special Teams Player of the Game” after he went 6-for-6 on PATs and kicked a “56-yard punt that flipped the field and swung momentum in the team’s favor” during a game against Pine Lake Prep on Nov. 10.
Outside of football, Liam can be seen on the soccer field as well, playing forward and midfield.
4. College Recruiting Was Slow – But Eventually Fruitful
Carneiro didn’t generate the level of camp exposure many elite kickers receive. His options were limited; ultimately he received just three scholarship offers, from Western Kentucky, Colorado and Arizona. Ultimately, he chose WKU largely because the other two felt too far from home.
At WKU, he quickly proved that the belief the coaching staff showed in him was well-placed. He became a reliable kicker, setting program records and finishing with high field-goal accuracy, including a standout senior season where he went 18-for-19 on field goals and was perfect on extra point attempts. These performances earned recognition and set the stage for his transfer to the SEC with Ole Miss.
“We felt like he was the best kicker in the country, coming out of Western Kentucky last year,” Pete Golding, Ole Miss head coach, said. “He’s done an unbelievable job this year. We’ve got all the confidence in the world with him.”
5. A Relationship at Ole Miss?
Off the field, Carneiro’s life in Oxford, Mississippi has also included a close personal connection that many fans have noticed. He has been linked with Layne Burkley, a fellow Ole Miss student who has been a visible presence at games.
Burkley is active on campus as a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Ole Miss, giving her a strong social presence within the university community. She’s also a 2023 graduate of Farragut High School in Tennessee, where she excelled academically and socially before making the move to Oxford for college.
Their connection has become part of the broader narrative around Carneiro’s time at Ole Miss, reflecting the support system surrounding him as he navigates both athletics and academics.
