Trinidad Chambliss' parents Trent and Cheryl Chambliss have been a major part of the Ole Miss' quarterback's journey.

As a national television audience watched, Trinidad Chambliss’ parents, Cheryl and Trent Chambliss, took center stage prior to Ole Miss’ upset victory over Georgia in the College Football Playoff. The family’s routine has been the same, it is just the audience that has gotten bigger.

Prior to every game, Trinidad’s mom Cheryl prays over the star quarterback. Few college football players have endured the amount of uncertainty as Trinidad, but the family has kept their Christian faith as the stabilizing force through all the turbulence.

As usual, Trinidad’s mom could be seen praying over the quarterback. Hours later, the signal-caller would have one of the best games of his career as Ole Miss defeated Georgia to advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Trinidad’s eligibility was in question after the quarterback initially transferred from Ferris State ahead of the 2025 season. Last summer, the quarterback was forced to work out at an Oxford-area Planet Fitness and remain away from his Ole Miss teammates until the NCAA confirmed his eligibility, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.

Eventually, things were resolved, at least temporarily, as Chambliss gained eligibility for 2025. There were issues with some of Trinidad’s credits transferring from Ferris State to Ole Miss which led to the quarterback needing to change his major and petition the university to approve some of his Ferris State credits.

“It was nerve-racking,” Cheryl told Dellenger of the offseason experience.

Trinidad Chambliss’ Family Have Relied on Their Faith Through Waves of Uncertainty

It is worth remembering that it was Austin Simmons, not Trinidad, who entered the season as the Ole Miss starting quarterback. Fast forward to Ole Miss’ preparation to take on Miami in the Fiesta Bowl, and once again uncertainty surrounds Trinidad. The quarterback’s college eligibility is set to expire after this season, but Trinidad is petitioning the NCAA to get approved to play in 2026.

Trinidad is citing medical challenges at Ferris State as one of several reasons he is seeking an additional season. All this transpires as Ole Miss also lost head coach Lane Kiffin before the start of the College Football Playoff. Once again, Trinidad appears to thrive amid uncertainty.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for him to play free and have fun,” Trinidad’s dad Trent told Yahoo Sports after the quarterback’s performance against Georgia. “He’s had an amazing season, but we haven’t seen the best of him until that game. Western Michigan knows that Trinidad.

“Ferris State knows that Trinidad. Everybody’s been waiting for that to happen. It was cool for him to finally reach a level of comfort.”

No, Trinidad Chambliss Is Not From Trinidad & Tobago

There seems to be some confusion about Trinidad’s heritage as the Trinidad and Tobago flag has been used by fans and even the quarterback’s own coach Pete Golding, to celebrate the star. Yet, Trinidad has no connection to the island.

Instead, Trinidad is from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he played at Forest Hills Northern High School. Trinidad’s name is a reference to the Trinity as well as his father’s affinity for boxer Felix Trinidad, per CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah.

“Since Chambliss broke out, Ole Miss fans have started waving national flags of Trinidad and Tobago in his honor,” Jeyarajah wrote in a January 7, 2026, story titled, “Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss’ unbelievable rise from Division II backup to College Football Playoff hero.” “But contrary to popular belief, Chambliss has no connection to the Caribbean. Former coach Lane Kiffin joked that the only island Chambliss has ever been to is Mackinac Island in Michigan.

“Chambliss comes from a religious family, and prays with his mother before every game. He is named after the Holy Trinity — if he was a girl, his mother would have named him Trinity. However, Chambliss’ father was also reportedly a fan of the boxer Felix Trinidad. Both combined to give Trinidad his now-iconic name.”
