After the University of Texas beat Vanderbilt 34 to 31, some Longhorns fans are calling for the referees to be investigated. They say the game wouldn’t have gotten so close in the fourth quarter if it hadn’t been for a number of questionable calls, including allowing a two-point conversion and not calling a pass interference.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian is turning some of those calls into the league office.
According to Danny Davis of the Statesman, Sarkisian “said he’ll turn in Vanderbilt’s late two-point conversion, Emmett Mosley V’s non-touchdown catch in the fourth quarter and that 3rd-and-2 false start on Brandon Baker to the league office.”
In a post-game Reddit thread, one commenter sarcastically wrote, “Didn’t realize the NCAA allowed the refs to bet on games they’re officiating.” Several other fans echoed the same sentiments in the thread.
“I hope they investigate the refs after this anyway. That was unacceptable,” one person wrote.
Fans also agreed that Arch Manning played his best game of the season so far, which allowed the team to ultimately still come out victorious. So they feel confident about future games.
One fan wrote on Reddit, “That was a 37-16 win without the refs single-handedly letting them back in the game. I’m not too worried about the ending outside of our secondary’s performance.”
The Referees Allowed a Two-Point Conversion That Some Fans Say Appeared Short
One of the decisions getting the most attention involves a controversial two-point conversion.
From the viewpoint in this video, the conversion appears to be short.
Even the announcers, after watching a replay from multiple angles, seemed to believe that Vanderbilt’s two-point conversion was short.
Some, however, argue that the problem is the camera’s perspective, noting that the pylon was off-center.
One person on X wrote, “The pylon cam is like half a foot out of being down the line, this is a bad angle.” And another person shared this photo, which is also embedded below, writing “You can’t overturn it.”
But many aren’t convinced. On X, College Football Report shared the conversion video and simply commented, “This is embarrassing.”
Fans Also Say That a Pass Interference Was Not Called
Fans are also concerned about a pass interference that wasn’t called. On X, one person shared a photo and wrote, “In what world is this not pass interference?! THE REF IS RIGHT THERE!”
These weren’t the only calls that caused fans concern.
A false start was called on Texas that some fans believed should have been an offside call against Vanderbilt.
One person on Reddit listed a few additional problems they had with calls made during the game: “And phantom holding against Texas, phantom false start, an obvious offsides on 4th and 6 that they just called as a false start, and more!”
Another wrote, “Don’t forget the many missed holding calls including the one where they tackled the DE that allowed Pavia to score on that long run.”
“Should be investigated,” another fan wrote.
Despite the calls, the Longhorns still won the game, and Manning looked solid after his concussion last week.
During a post-game interview, Manning even joked, “Maybe the concussion helped.”
