After New Zealand experienced a loss to England on February 27, Pakistan has been gifted renewed hope in the men’s 2026 T20 Cricket World Cup. In a fight to make it out of the Super 8s stage and secure one of two group berths in the semi-finals, Pakistan’s hopes for advancement would have been dashed if New Zealand had won against England and then gone on to win their final fixture as well.

But now with a mixed outcome for the Black Caps, Pakistan has been handed an opening for securing a spot in the next round of the tournament. England has secured a qualified berth into the semi-finals of the T20 Cricket World Cup next week, but the final spot is still up for grabs. Here’s what to know about Pakistan’s chances of making it out of the Super 8s now that NZ has lost to England.

How Pakistan Benefits From New Zealand’s Loss

In T20 World Cups, the top two teams from each group advance to the next level of competition. Pakistan was already placed in a group with highly contested matchups, but after Sri Lanka effectively became unable to reach the semi-finals following the co-host country’s most recent loss, the second of two semi-finals berths has come down to going to either New Zealand or Pakistan.

New Zealand’s loss to England has had a two-fold impact on Pakistan’s chances of advancement out of the Super 8s. The first advantage is that it has reduced the pressure on Pakistan to close the Net Run Rate (NRR) margin with that of New Zealand’s typically strong NRR. Given Pakistan’s inconsistency so far in the tournament and difficulty with gaining a competitive NRR, having New Zealand fall to England now takes pressure off of Pakistan to close the gap since that has naturally occurred at this point.

The second benefit of New Zealand’s loss for Pakistan is that the final fixture for the team now carries more weight, meaning that Pakistan can make a comeback in their next game that may not have been a likelihood had New Zealand won against England.

Net Run Rate (NRR) is Increasingly Likely to Decide Advancement to Semi-Finals

T20 cricket often comes down to Net Rate Run (NRR) as a deciding factor in tournament advancement when two teams end a round of matches on the same number of points. Since New Zealand’s loss has increased the points available relative to a direct rival, Pakistan’s remaining fixture is more important and carries more weight.

But just because Pakistan won’t have as much pressure on the team’s shoulders going into the final games of the Super 8s, it doesn’t mean that they can relax too much. The team must avoid narrow defeats as these dents in NRR could prove costly if both Pakistan and New Zealand ultimately have three points each at the end of the Super 8s with both teams vying for the final berth to play in the semi-finals.
