Ahead of the 2026 Masters, fans are once again reflecting on the dramatic finish from last year, when Bryson DeChambeau came close to a career-defining victory at Augusta National. Entering the final round just two shots back, DeChambeau was paired alongside Rory McIlroy in a high-stakes Sunday showdown.

Tension between the two existed throughout the day, as both golfers battled the course, and each other. While DeChambeau had moments where he looked ready to take over, a few misses ultimately allowed McIlroy to surge ahead. McIlroy then went on to capture his first green jacket in memorable fashion.

Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy Rivalry History

For years, there has been speculation surrounding a rivalry between DeChambeau and McIlroy. From their contrasting approaches to the game to their place on opposite sides of golf’s evolving landscape, the two have often appeared at odds. Add in their differing personalities, and it’s no surprise that reports have long suggested the pair have never really seen eye to eye.

The 2025 Masters only intensified that narrative. Not only was there a disagreement over who should putt first, but, according to DeChambeau, McIlroy barely acknowledged him during their final round together. Afterward, he said that his playing partner “wouldn’t talk to him all day.” The perceived snub didn’t go unnoticed, and it added another layer to their already complicated dynamic.

Things didn’t cool off after that. A recent documentary chronicling McIlroy’s Masters victory included moments that further fueled the tension. Reflecting on a pivotal missed putt by DeChambeau, McIlroy downplayed his competitor’s impact during the tournament. “I felt like Bryson wasn’t really a factor in the tournament after that point,” McIlroy said, referencing the moment he regained momentum and ultimately took control of the leaderboard.

Now, as the 2026 Masters approaches, DeChambeau is not sidestepping the conversation. Speaking in an interview at Augusta National with the Golf Channel, he openly embraced the idea that a rivalry between the two stars is not only real, but beneficial for the sport.

“It’s great if we can continue to have a rivalry,” DeChambeau said. “I don’t see any problem with that. If anything, it helps create more buzz around the game of golf.”

Despite the competitive edge, DeChambeau made it clear that there is still a strong level of respect between the two. “Do I respect him as an individual? One hundred percent,” he said. “Do I want to beat him every time I see him? Absolutely. There’s no question about it.”

He went on to describe that balance as one of the game’s most interesting elements. He mentions the importance of the ability to maintain sportsmanship while competing at the highest level. “That’s what’s so brilliant about golf,” DeChambeau added. “You have that respect, but at the same time you want to beat the living you-know-what out of them.”

Both players having traded victories on big stages, with DeChambeau noting, “I got him at Pinehurst. He got me here,” and now the stage is set for their next chapter at Augusta National.
